Beginning at the End!
The beginning of Rawnata started at the end. My end. Yup! I was chronically constipated and my health was starting to erode. It was evident that I was becoming a prime candidate for disease – and that to ignore my problem could be deadly.
I was a busy mom only in my mid-thirties, trying to keep up with the demands of caring for four young children. Not only was I constipated, tired, and experiencing strange rashes and allergies, but I had a thick white coating on my tongue that never seemed to go away. None of these things in and of themselves was of significant concern to me, but when I began to put them all together, I feared that I might not live to see my children grow up. I didn’t want my life to end prematurely.
Thankfully, around this time I happened to read some articles by two sisters named Serene and Pearl*. The things they shared about healthy eating were beginning to set the wheels in motion for me to take charge of my health. I began to replace the white flour and white sugar in my diet with whole grains and natural sweeteners. I was no longer constipated, and was now enjoying increased vitality.
St. Norbert Farmers Market
Motivated by how much better I was feeling, I began sharing my love of whole grains. I began The Bread Lady business at the St. Norbert Farmers Market in Winnipeg. Every Saturday during the summer I would bring along freshly made wholegrain baking to sell. Demand for it grew to the point that I was no longer able to manage the baking myself. http://rawnata.com/about
The End to My Low Energy
A few years later I was expecting Baby #6. The white coating on my tongue had never gone away, and my energy was lagging again. My doctor said there was nothing to worry about, but I didn’t agree. I visited a naturopath and from the moment I left his office that day, I had resolved to make even more radical changes to my eating. Those changes were the catalyst which eventually were the beginning of Rawnata! I discovered the amazing benefits of raw foods, became enthusiastic about them, and began thinking about ways to incorporate them into The Bread Lady business. Despite now having 6 young children, my energy levels and health had never been better. My thinking was clear and daytime naps were a thing of the past.
The Contest that Changed Everything
In 2011 I entered one of my creations – the Rawdical Chocolate Hemp cookie – into a provincial food competition focusing on innovation, and took home the $15,000 Grand Prize. This prize enabled me to work with Manitoba’s Food Development Centre to perfect my recipe and to lay the groundwork for my new brand, Rawnata. http://rawnata.com/
You may be like I was. Your road to wellness may begin by replacing the white flour in your diet with wholegrain flour. You may need to replace the white sugar with honey or maple sugar. It may mean choosing to eat a large salad as part of your daily routine rather than a sandwich, or choosing an apple over a handful of potato chips. Hey, you might even need to learn to like flax and hemp! The important thing is to start making changes TODAY! End the constant consumption of overly refined, empty calorie foods by beginning to eat more whole foods! Treat your body like the intricate machine that it is: maintain it and give it what it needs to operate at peak performance.
Many people have the mistaken notion that food is just fuel – energy to get you where you want to go – when it’s actually the way your body regenerates and renews itself. I embraced this concept, and ultimately changed my life. And that’s why we’ve purposefully created our snacks to give you energy as well as building blocks for cellular regeneration. That’s why we make sure that the #1 ingredient in our snacks is either flax or hemp!
We make Rawnata snacks from seeds – they’re actually the #1 ingredient! This means that they’re full of high quality plant protein and fibre! That’s good! Very good, in fact! Other ingredients are carefully selected for nutrient density – things like coconut, goji berries, matcha powder, sunflower seeds, vegetable powders and herbs. Even our sweeter snacks use a sugar with known health benefits! These are lightweight snacks, so we need to pack as much nutrition into them as possible!
Beginning the Journey
It is my sincere hope that you already care about what you put into your body. If you don’t, please consider changing the way you think about food – you never know where it will take you! I’m hoping that today will be the beginning of your journey~ Natalie
